Pride and Prey is one of those 2019 Light & Wonder titles that flew under most radars but quietly hides a 97.52% RTP, which is generous by any measure. Red7 built it for the old Scientific Games platform before the L&W rebrand, and the African savanna theme is painted with real care: tangled vines frame the 5×3 grid, an acacia-dotted plain stretches behind the reels, and a pale moon hangs over distant mountains even though the sky is blue. Lions, lionesses, cubs, zebras, giraffes. Gem-cut card suits. It feels lived in.

The base game is a standard 20-line, fixed-payline affair with natural Wilds and a Lion scatter that only ever lands on reels 1, 3 and 5. Bet anywhere from $0.10 up to $200. Top symbol pays 200x line stake for five of a kind, max win sits at 2,500x. Volatility lands in the medium-high zone. And yes, three lions trigger the bonus, awarding 8 free spins. Nothing radical so far.

But the free spins flip the script in a way I genuinely haven't seen elsewhere. Wilds stop showing up naturally. Instead, at the end of every spin, the game claws a handful of random symbols and slashes them into Wilds for the next evaluation. Scatters can get slashed too, which means three lions surviving on the board still trigger +4 spins. It's chaotic and quite satisfying once it gets rolling.

Then there's the Any Stake Rewards ladder running down the left edge. 10 lion badges you unlock through gameplay milestones, persistent across real-money sessions. Lazy Lion for five losses in a row. Lion on a Roll for five wins. Angry Lion if you rack up 10 slashes in one bonus round. Centurion at 100 spins. Dizzy Lion at 1,000 spins. Each pays out scaled to your average bet. Honestly, the Dizzy Lion tier feels like grind for grind's sake. Who realistically sits through a thousand spins to unlock a single badge?

One last quirk: Wager Saver. If your balance drops below your last total bet, you spin a small wheel for 1x, 3x or 5x to claw funds back. Useful, sort of patronising. There's no buy bonus either, so the slash feature is gated entirely behind lion-luck. Fair? Probably. Frustrating on a cold session? Definitely.
