Polterheist is a 2018 oddity from Side City Studios wearing a NextGen badge, which then got swept under the Light & Wonder umbrella when the rebrand wave hit. The setting is a haunted saloon stripped of color and pumped full of neon: carved wooden columns wrapped in cobwebs, candles flickering on the cabinet frame, midnight sky bleeding past the sides. Four cartoon ghost outlaws (a mariachi in a red sombrero, a yellow-hatted cowboy clutching a pistol, a purple-cloaked desperado, a green slime blob) shuffle across a 5×3 grid wired for 100 fixed paylines. Stakes run $0.01 to $100. RTP sits at 96.19%, volatility lands medium, and the published ceiling reaches 5,000x.

The two random base-game modifiers are where things get interesting, and a little mean. Ghost Break-In picks one ghost and rewrites every other ghost on the reels to match it, then drops stacks of that same character across the grid. OAK potential balloons in one move. Haunted Wilds instead splashes 2, 3 or 4 extra WANTED DEAD parchment Wilds onto reels 2, 3 and 4 before the spin even resolves. Both can fire on any paid spin. Both fire more often inside Free Games too.

Here's the catch. They're mutually exclusive, and the Safe scatter trigger is locked out the moment either one activates. So your big modifier spin literally cannot drop the bonus on the same go. That trade-off is the volatility engine, and honestly, it stings a bit when you watch a screen full of cowboy ghosts pay nicely while knowing you bought yourself out of the trigger.

Free Games need one gold-vault Safe on reels 1, 3 and 5 (one each, no clustering allowed) for 8 spins. Every win inside gets a random 2x, 3x or 5x multiplier, not every spin, which is a meaningful distinction. Retriggers stack: one extra Safe adds a single spin, two adds five, three adds eight. The path to that 5,000x ceiling runs through Goldie Goldrush, the top ghost, filling the grid with Wild help and a 5x roll landing on the right beat.

And no, there's no buy bonus, no ante, no gamble. For a slot built around a one-scatter-per-reel trigger that gets actively suppressed by its own headline features, a buy button would've been welcome. But Polterheist is what it is: a 2018 NextGen character piece, charming as a horror cartoon, mathematically harsher than the goofy art lets on.
