Released in August 2017 under the Light & Wonder umbrella, Fortunes of the Dead is one of those Side City Studios releases that quietly does more than its cabinet-friendly visuals suggest. Five reels, three rows, fifty fixed paylines. Bets run from a penny up to ten dollars, so it works for grinders and mid-rollers alike, and the published RTP sits at 95.79% with medium-high volatility. Is that RTP a bit underwhelming by 2026 standards? Honestly, yeah. But the math underneath earns some forgiveness.

Here's what makes this slot odd in the best way. Three separate bonuses can fire on the same spin, which was almost unheard of for a 50-line release at the time. The Skull Bonus needs glowing skulls on reels 1, 3, and 5 simultaneously (and skulls only appear on those three reels, so the trigger is tight). Land it and you pick one of three skulls for an instant cash prize. Then there's the Once in a Wild feature, which strikes randomly during base play with zero warning. Reels lock, four wilds drop into random positions, and you get a single respin. If that respin somehow fizzles, the game has a floor: it'll pay you a minimum of 50% of your stake. Worst case, a half-bet refund.

The headline act is Free Games, triggered by three skeleton-on-horseback Scatters on reels 2, 3, and 4. You get exactly five spins. No more, no less, no retrigger inside the bonus, no scaling if extra scatters somehow appeared. Sounds stingy? It would be, except every single spin drops one wild that sticks for the rest of the round. By spin five you could be sitting on four locked wilds plus whatever the final spin contributes. Late spins are where the multipliers genuinely build, and the wild subs for everything except Skull and Scatter.

The art direction leans into Día de los Muertos folk imagery: a sugar-skull bull mask, glowing calaveras, a moonlit desert dotted with cacti and crumbling adobe. Painted, almost mural-like, never cartoonish. Max win lands at $250,000, and while five free spins feels light on paper, the sticky-wild compounding is what justifies the whole design.
