Some slots earn their place in the canon by being flashy. Black Knight earned it by being stubborn. The original WMS cabinet launched on casino floors in 2012, became a quiet workhorse for years, and finally got its online conversion in 2014 under what's now the Light and Wonder banner. The art still looks like 2012. That's not entirely a compliment, but it is part of the charm.

The setup is straightforward: a 5×3 grid, 10 fixed paylines, parchment background framed in heraldic gold, twilight castles smudged on the horizon. Stakes run from $0.10 up to a hefty $500 a spin. The headline RTP is 96%, but here's the asterisk most reviews skip. Stake under $2 and you're actually on the 94% table. Push to $2 or above and you flip into 96%. Hit the BB button and the Big Bet mode pushes you to 97.75%. Three tiers, one game. You should know which one you're playing.

Volatility sits in the medium-high band, and the math caps out at a flat 25,000x. Symbols are gilded relics, the Crown, Sceptre, Orb, Knight Ring, plus a blue Jester and a regal King who quietly carries the paytable.

The Black Knight himself, mounted on his warhorse, is the wild. He only shows up on reels 2, 3 and 4, never the outer reels. That restriction matters. In the free spins round, triggered by 3, 4 or 5 purple-and-gold BONUS shields (7, 12, or even more spins respectively), every Black Knight that lands expands across the entire reel and stays held for the rest of the bonus. No retriggers, since the BONUS symbol is yanked from the strips. But if you land all five shields on the base game, that's a flat 500x total-bet jackpot on top.

Then there's the Big Bet feature. Press BB, lock $20 across five spins, and the Black Knight stays held on the middle three reels for all five. Critically, the wild now substitutes for everything, including the bonus shield. Land five shields in Big Bet and you get a flat 500 jackpot, not stake-multiplied. A genuinely odd carryover from the cabinet that nobody bothered to rewrite.

Is the soundtrack dated? Painfully. Trumpet stings, looping court music, animations that don't quite belong in 2026. Does the math still hold up? Yes, mostly. A budget-conscious player who only spins below $2 leaves real value on the table. Push the stake, or try the Big Bet, and Black Knight finally shows you why it stuck around.
